Sygol was born towards the end of 1999 as a very simple classified ads site.

In the year 2000 I had to learn about SQL and ASP technologies for my work and, to accomplish this, I rewrote Sygol using these two technologies.

Then it became natural to add various functionalities to the site, such as:

• A directory with 1400+ categories of ads, sites and auctions which, being regularly spidered, are also searchable from the search engine.
• A search engine of both web pages (html) and files (jpeg, mp3, etc.)
• Multilanguage support (Italian and English for now): to add a new language you just add a column in a DB table.
• Domain search.
• Language Identification, i.e. the spiders try to guess the languages the pages are written in (Version Beta 0.000).
• UNICODE support (could be improved).
• Question: does anybody know how to implement spell checking without dedicating a supercomputer to the task?

Even though Sygol was designed for working on more than 100 computers, at the moment it is running on just 4 PCs... I must admit that the entire system is a little bit overloaded,  the disks' lights are constantly lit and every so often a hard disk just gives up.

The connection to the Internet is a 2 Mb HDSL (1 Mbit effective).

In other words, this is my hobby.

P.S. SYGOL stands for Sell Your Goods On Line. I wanted to register a similar domain but I made a typo and wrote sygol.com and  noticed it was available. I corrected the mistake just to find out that the original domain was taken so I stuck with the typo, since finding a free short .com that means anything is close to impossible.
